What it costs
Important – court fee: Separately, the court requires an advance fee that you pay directly to the court: typically €849 for citizenship (amount in dispute €10,000; some courts set less when only a decision is demanded), approx. €511.50 for a residence permit. If the authority had no sufficient reason for the delay, in many cases it bears the costs (§161(3) VwGO) – this is not guaranteed.

FAQ
Do I need a lawyer?
No. There is no requirement to be represented by a lawyer at the administrative court (first instance). You can file yourself. For questions about your specific case, you should still consult a lawyer.
Can I file by email?
No. A plain email is not a valid way to file a lawsuit. Valid options include Mein Justizpostfach (MJP) or a signed letter by post. The guide explains both.
What does the court cost?
Typically €849 for citizenship (amount in dispute €10,000, sometimes less) and approx. €511.50 for a residence permit. You pay this advance directly to the court; it is not included in the €79. In many cases the authority has to bear the costs if it failed to decide without sufficient reason (§161(3) VwGO).
What if the authority decides in the meantime?
Then your goal is often reached. The case is usually declared settled and the court decides on costs. The guide explains what to do in that case.
